"The Picture of Dorian Gray"

Ivan Albright - Oil On Canvas - 215 x 106 cm

famous painting The Picture of Dorian Gray of Ivan Albright
This painting was made as a portrait for the adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s Novel, titled the same. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the rights to this work. The novel chronicles the degradation of a young rich man named Dorian who asks for a portrait of himself to be made. In order to eternally preserve his beauty, he exchanges his soul for it. Instead of him, his ageing and degradation shows in the rotting portrait as it gets uglier with every sin he commits. The portrait does not only show Dorian age with his actions, but also demonstrates a physical degradation in every element – from the clock on the wall to the elegant side table. Everything that was once dripping with the glory of youth is now hollow with the dread of corruption. Ivan Albright was sent to France during the First World War to depict wounded soldiers. That set the tone for his later work, where he would similarly disfigure the human body in order to allow further contemplation on the human condition. Even though this film was made in black and white, Albright’s portrait was painted and displayed in technicolour.
