"The Phantom Cart"
Salvador Dali - Oil
Amidst a vast plain, we see a small cart riding into the city, which we see on the far horizon. The colour palette is limited and muted, it makes the cart blend with its backdrop. Salvador Dali is a master of optical illusion, often leaving many in his work, he intended to challenge the viewer’s perception so that they might see beyond the surface, in most of his works, he plays with angles and perspective. In The Phantom Cart, he confuses us again- in the place where there should be wheels, he has drawn two stakes into the ground and the figures inside the cart can be identified with the city’s architecture. Here, he may be implying that the cart itself is the destination.
